Following the successful scheme running in the London Borough of Barnet, Enfield are now piloting their own Education Champions Scheme. The scheme has 25 senior managers from the Council (including the Chief Executiove and the senior management team), Police and PCT. The aim is to improve how well looked after children do at school.
Background
Champions work with the young person’s social worker to do what they can, using their networks and seniority, to remove any barriers preventing these young people from achieving their full potential.
Champions will be matched to a young person based on some details they’ll provide us with. For example, if a Champion has an interest in a particular area, we will match them to a young person with a similar interest. The young people taking part in the scheme are those who we have identified as needing the most support to achieve their potential.
Champions will meet with the social worker once a term to agree actions. There’ll also be a meeting for all Champions and social workers at the beginning and end of the pilot. The first, in July 2008, provides opportunities for Champions to find out more about care and education, and the second, in July 2009, will evaluate the pilot. This will include an assessment of academic progress, feedback questionnaires and face-to-face interviews.
