• The under-18 conception rate has decreased by 7% since the 1998 baseline. Islington is amber-red RAG rated.
• There are high levels of deprivation and under-18 conceptions throughout the borough. All wards have 20% most disadvantaged super output areas. The highest number of conceptions is concentrated in Tollington and Finsbury Park in the north and Bunhill in the south.
• There are two community contraceptive clinics, one offering sessions Monday-Friday and the other Monday-Thursday. Both offer a range of afternoon and evening clinics.
• One GUM clinic is listed, with sessions Monday-Friday. These end by mid-afternoon apart from on Thursday which ends at 6.30, and may be difficult for young people in education to attend.
• There are four young people’s services in Islington with services Monday-Saturday. All offer contraception and some STI screening. All sessions take place in the afternoon and early evening. Two of the young people’s services are in the north of the borough and two of the services are in the centre.
• All young people’s services and community contraceptive clinics offer pregnancy testing and referral for abortion or ante natal care
• There is an EHC in pharmacy scheme with participating pharmacies across the borough.
• A condom distribution scheme has recently been started with 14 easy access points across the borough and plans to establish more.
Suggestions for future developments
• Consider the timing of GUM sessions to allow young people in education to attend more easily
• If long acting methods of contraception are not available at all sessions accessed by young people, consider this as a service development
