• The under-18 conception rate has increased by 19% since 1998 baseline. Enfield is red RAG rated.
• Enfield is an accelerated borough, of which there are 21 nationally and 4 in London. An accelerated borough is a borough that has had considerable difficulty reducing the conception rate and needs additional support to accelerate the rate of reduction.
• There is a clear east-west divide in the borough with high levels of deprivation and teenage pregnancy being concentrated in the east of the borough.
• There is a good spread of integrated sexual and reproductive health and community contraceptive clinics, the majority of which are open at times accessible to young people in education. The majority of services take place in the more disadvantaged east of the borough.
• There are no young people specific clinical sessions listed. The 4YP service which is both static sessions and a mobile bus, offers advice, information, pregnancy testing and condom distribution and is listed as a condom distribution site.
• All clinical services and the 4YP drop-ins provide pregnancy testing. Referral for abortion or ante-natal care are also available at community contraceptive clinics
• The condom distribution sites (mostly 4YP bus stopping points) are targeted towards more disadvantaged areas.
• EHC in pharmacy scheme with participating pharmacies across the borough.
Suggestions for future developments
• Consider the extension of the condom distribution scheme beyond the existing 4YP service and ensures the distribution of condoms across a range of settings accessed by young people
• Consider the development of young people specific clinical services
• Ensure that all existing services are able to meet the You’re Welcome standards, and ensure that contacts are established with the London You’re Welcome pilot so that Enfield can be prioritised for support by the programme
