•  The under-18 conception rate has decreased by 1% from 1998 baseline. Bexley is red RAG rated.
•  There is a concentration of high under-18 conception rates in the north of the borough, and a strong overlap between high teenage conceptions and deprivation.
•  There is no community contraceptive or GUM service in Bexley
•  There is a good spread of young people’s clinics, including in high rate areas.
•  Not clear what range of contraceptives is provided in young people’s clinics or if long acting methods are available.
•  Most young people’s clinics are open once or twice a week; one service is open Monday to Friday. No service on a Saturday. Opening times are accessible to young people in education.
•  All clinical services provide pregnancy testing, and referral to abortion or ante natal care
•  EHC in pharmacy scheme, including a number of pharmacies which also distribute free condoms
•  There is a limited condom distribution scheme, provided through a number of participating pharmacies and the young people’s clinics.

Suggestions for future developments
•  The lack of community contraceptive services and GUM in Bexley is worrying. If strong links from young people’s services to primary care and neighbouring GUM services do not exist, suggest these are developed so that young people are clear where else and when they are able to access sexual and reproductive health care
•  Given the lack of community contraceptive services and GUM in Bexley, it is also of concern that there is no Saturday service available to young people.
•  It is not clear what range of contraceptives is available from young people’s services. If long acting methods are not currently available, suggest that this is a service development for the coming year.
•  Consider the expansion of the condom distribution scheme such as the C-Card scheme with training for staff and distribution of condoms across a range of settings accessed by young people such as youth, education or care settings.
