Tavistock-Haringey Service: Placement Stability Research Project

Date: 08 July 2008

This research project is funded as part of the overall CAMHS Grant funding for the Tavistock-Haringey Service. It is linked to another research project looking at the mental health and developmental needs of children and young people in care aged 5 years and under.

The Tavistock-Haringey Service is a psychotherapy, mental health and placement support service for children and young people in Haringey Care. In partnership with Haringey Social Workers, Placements Officers and Foster Carers they have developed a tool to predict when a placement is at risk of breakdown.

It is called the Placement Stability Rating Scale (PS-RS) and is structured like the Strengths & Difficulties Questionnaire, identifying areas of strength and vulnerability in foster placements. A pilot study in 2007 produced interesting and new findings on the factors which affect placement stability. The PS-RS is now being sent to all Haringey Foster Carers and placements will be tracked for a year to test the reliability and validity of the tool.

Once validated the PS-RS will be used by Social Workers at regular intervals with all foster carers to alert them to potential difficulties. A web-site for on-line scoring and recommendations for interventions will be developed by 2010. In a further study the PS-RS will be used to evaluate it’s effectiveness in reducing placement breakdown.
