Date: 05 November 2008

The London Youth Crime Prevention Board (LYCPB) launched the The London Schools Programme for Safety and Cohesion at the Tower Of London on the 5th November.

See the Press Notice HERE

This programme is a key part of the London Youth Crime Prevention Board’s work to support young people in the capital to stay safe, stay out of trouble and make a positive contribution. The particular goals of the London Schools Programme for Safety and Cohesion are to embed effective safety and crime reduction strategies in the culture of schools, to measurably improve feelings of safety by young people and achieve measurable reductions in young people’s involvement in crime as victims or offenders.

The programme makes a significant contribution to youth crime prevention strategies and has been supported by the Metropolitan Police, Youth Justice Board, Young London Matters, Government Office London and National Strategies for Behaviour and Attendance.

This event marked the roll out of the programme in 27 pilot schools and PRU’s across the region. Early outcomes for the programme have shown that the process is helping to support joint working, facilitate information sharing and provide support to schools for pupils at risk of engagement in crime.

Delegates at the event included Head Teachers, Police Borough Commanders, Directors of Children’s Services, Safer Schools Partnerships, Safer Neighborhood Team officers, Youth Offending Teams and other key strategic partners. Pilot schools (including some pupils) were also present and will be showcasing some early developments.

Keynote speakers:

• Lord Victor Adebowale (Chair - LYCPB, Chief Executive - Turning Point)
• Rt Hon Tony McNulty MP (Minister of State - Welfare Reform; Minister for London)
• Ian Clement (Deputy Mayor, Government Relations)
• Rose Fitzpatrick (Deputy Assistant Commisioner - Metropolitan Police)
• Graham Robb (Board Member and Former Chair - Youth Justice Board, Member - LYCPB)
