A London wide Learning Event to kick off the roll out of the ‘You’re Welcome’ Quality Criteria was held on Thursday 24th April, targeting London PCTs and Local Authorities.
‘You’re Welcome’ was piloted in 8 London Boroughs in 2008/09 and aims to increase young people’s involvement and increase youth friendliness of health services, ultimately improving health outcomes for young people. The revised 'You're Welcome' quality criteria lay out principles to help health services – in the community and in hospitals – to be young people friendly.
The Learning event aimed to showcase local, regional and national activity in the delivery of the 'You're Welcome' Pilot. 140 delegats attended the event, representing 22 PCTs, young people and a range of health provider services.
London, one of four regions that delivered a pilot across 8 local areas achieved 55 services self assessing against a range of criteria using the 'You're Welcome' self assessment toolkit.
In addition to this, as a region London tested and developed a young people's participation framework as part of quality assurance, placing young people at the heart of the process. Over a 5 month period, 70 young people from across London were trained as young assessors, testing 45% of the services that self assessed.
The event was enhanced through young assessors presenting their activities and findings, identifying a range of experiences of health settings from excellent to very poor, demonstrating how London young people have grasped the opportunity to help shape health service delivery.
October 2008 will see the Health minister launch the national programme in London.
