The TDA supports schools in three ways; securing workforce supply, supporting school workforce development and supporting modernisation.
To achieve this the TDA works with many partners including, the Department of Children Schools and Families, local authorities, schools and other agencies to support teacher recruitment, secure a supply of high quality candidates into initial teacher training, develop professional standards, support performance management, and support the introduction of extended schools.
Swift and Easy Access - linking schools into targeted youth support Under the extended schools programme, two key areas of work the TDA are involved in with schools are; Swift and Easy Access and Targeted Youth Support.
Targeted Youth Support (TYS) is a multi-agency approach to supporting vulnerable young people – in school and not in school – as early as possible to prevent their problems escalating and to improve their life chances. The development of swift and easy access (SEA) arrangements in schools, as part of their extended services provision, gives schools a pivotal role in this work.
School is an ideal place to identify early signs that a child or young person is at risk of not achieving one of the five Every Child Matters outcomes. In SEA arrangements, schools can get help in confirming their concerns, and provide or draw in targeted or specialist support as needed.
As part of the local area’s integrated working provision, SEA involves schools, agencies and other local organisations to work in partnership to support children, young people and families. This integrated provision will increasingly be provided through children’s trusts.
Schools by themselves cannot provide all the support vulnerable young people need. Building on the support and prevention work that schools already provide their vulnerable pupils, TYS enables schools to access the right support at the right time for vulnerable young people and provides a clear route of referral to specialist services when appropriate.
This increased focus on multi-agency working helps ensure effective early support for all vulnerable young people and ultimately will have a positive impact on school attendance, exclusions and standards.
